Positive Relationships

Respect is at the heart of every positive relationship and strong school community. It means understanding that everyone has the right to feel safe, valued, and included. It also means recognising that differences, whether in opinion, culture, background, or belief, should be treated with acceptance and understanding. Children who learn respect are more likely to develop strong friendships, make responsible choices, and contribute positively to their community.

Catholic schools teach respect and inclusion through every aspect of school life; in classrooms, playgrounds, prayer, and community. These values are shaped by the teachings of Jesus and supported through learning programs that focus on social and emotional development.

Catholic schools connect these principles with Gospel values, encouraging students to treat others with dignity, listen with empathy, and stand up for justice. Respect and inclusion are also fostered through religious education, pastoral care programs, prayer, liturgy, and community service. These experiences guide students to live their faith in action and to see every person as made in the image and likeness of God.

Parents play a vital role in reinforcing these lessons at home. Talking with your child about fairness, respect, and boundaries helps them apply what they learn at school in everyday life. Open conversations about emotions, relationships, and empathy help build trust and understanding between parents and children.

You can support your child to respect themselves and others by:

  • encouraging empathy and kindness in daily life.
  • talking about the importance of consent, boundaries, and equality.
  • discussing how to handle conflict respectfully and calmly.
  • staying informed about how respect and inclusion are taught at your child’s school and reinforcing those messages at home.
